Landscape Near Zandaam by Monet in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, January 2008

Landscape Near Zandaam by Monet in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, January 2008
Landscape at Zaandam, 1871-2
Claude Monet (French, 1840–1926)
Oil on canvas; 18 x 26 3/8 in. (45.7 x 67 cm)
Robert Lehman Collection, 1975 (1975.1.196)

Monet abandoned Paris in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian war. He went briefly to London and then, on the advice of the Barbizon painter Charles François Daubigny, to Zaandam in the Netherlands where this painting was executed. Employing a limited palette in which muted shades of green predominate, the artist brilliantly captured the essence of this picturesque port's hazy, damp, atmosphere and light dappled water. Monet's dutch landscapes were greatly admired by his fellow artist's, especially Daubigny.
