Aquamanile in the Form of Samson and the Lion
Copper alloy
German, late 14th century

The Robert Lehman Collection, Accession # 1975.1.1412

Samson is presented as a bearded, courtly hero dressed in fashionable 14th century attire- a tight fitted jacket, hose, and pointed shoes. Unlike the other examples exhibited nearby, these figures were modeled separately and joined before casting.
