Head of Dionysos in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, September 2010

Head of Dionysos in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, September 2010
Head of Dionysos (The God of Wine and Divine Intoxication)

Date: 4th–5th century

Culture: Pakistan (ancient region of Gandhara)

Medium: Terracotta

Dimensions: H. 9 1/2 in. (24.1 cm); W. 7 in. (17.8 cm); D. 6 1/2 in. (16.5 cm)

Classification: Sculpture

Credit Line: Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Uzi Zucker, 1979

Accession Number: 1979.507.2

Description:

This mature bearded man has grape leaves in his hair, suggesting that he is Dionysos. The furrowed brow, indications of age, and piercing gaze reflect a taste for naturalism. The head was buried, and over the centuries a hard crust developed on the surface.
