Terracotta Tomb Plaque in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, March 2009

Terracotta Tomb Plaque in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, March 2009
Terracotta Tomb Plaque
Visigothic or Byzantine
Made 400-800, probably in Spain
Inscribed in Latin: BRACA RIVI / VASCUM TUIS

Accession # 1985.147

This plaque is thought to be a cover for a niche in a columbarium, or communal tomb. The Christogram identifies the deceased as Christian. Scholars debate the meaning of the inscription, which may be a prayer for the deceased.

Text from the Metropolitan Museum of Art label.
