Glass Cinerary Urn and Ashes in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, March 2010

Glass Cinerary Urn and Ashes in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, March 2010
Glass Cinerary Urn with Ashes
Roman, free-blown, 2nd half 1st century AD

Accession # 17.194.146

In the first century AD, glass vessels became a popular choice for use as cinerary urns. Many have been found still containing cremated remains, as has this vessel, which is said to be from Augustoritum in Gaul (modern Limoges, France).
