Marble Torso of Apollo Lykeios in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, July 2007

Marble Torso of Apollo Lykeios in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, July 2007
Marble torso of the so-called Apollo Lykeios
Roman, late Hadrianic or early Antonine period, 130-161 AD
Copy of a Greek bronze statue of the mid-4th century BC often attributed to Praxiteles

Accession #03.12.12d

This torso was part of the collection of antiquities assembled in Rome by the Marquess Vincenzo Giustiniani during the first third of the 17th century. As was the custom during the 17th and 18th centuries, contemporary sculptors carved the missing parts and added them to what remained of the ancient statue. This torso was mistakenly restored as Dionysos instead of Apollo. The 17th century additions were removed when it came to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
