Statuette of Venus in the Getty Villa, July 2008

Statuette of Venus in the Getty Villa, July 2008
Statuette of Venus
Roman, AD 100-300
Silver and gold

Inventory # 76.AM.4

Leaning against a pillar, this regal figure of Venus wears a crown, and a bracelet encircles her right upper arm. Romans displayed statuettes of the gods in lararia (household shrines) to ensure good fortune for family members. In wealthy homes, the statuettes were often made of precious materials, such as silver and gold.
