Mixing Vessel with Horses and Youths in the Getty Villa, July 2008

Mixing Vessel with Horses and Youths in the Getty Villa, July 2008
Mixing Vessel with Horses and Youths
Greek, made in Athens, about 480 BC
Terracotta
Red-figured column krater attributed to Myson as painter

Inventory # 86.AE.205

A krater was used to mix wine and water at a symposion, an aristocratic male drinking party. On this example, two young men are shown leading their horses. The scene would have reflected the interests of the party's participants, since owning and caring for horses was a privilege of wealthy Athenians.
