Hunting for Pollen

Hunting for Pollen
Now that autumn is here the flowers are all slowly dying. Pollen is becoming difficult to find, but there are still some bees out there working hard to find what is left.

trester88, John FitzGerald, aNNa schramm, Fred Fouarge and 25 other people have particularly liked this photo

Superb colours and fine detail are both features of this wonderful close up image Keith,
The Bee is the star of the show and is not doing badly for October although I suspect its foraging days are drawing to a close.

Have a great weekend and take care!

Thank you for these generous comments Roger...........I'm pleased you like this image. I'm seeing very few bees and other insects, even though the potted flowers in my front garden are still flowering nicely.

I hope you're enjoying the weekend. Regards, Keith.

A great closeup of this bee on the yellow flower head (looking like a small sunflower). We have a wasp nest close by our windows and at the moment the wasp seem to be working twice as hard flying in and out of the hole in the dry-stone wall in which their nest is hidden. I presume they are still gathering pollen but at this time of year I doubt that the queen still requires it. I did wonder about taking some photos but they go hysterical if I get too close to the entrance. Eileen was stung once last year. We are most reluctant to destroy their home as they do a fine job of pollinating our many flowering plants, probably even more than the many visiting bees. Anyway, well done lad.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend. Herb

Glad you like this one Herb..........it was taken in a park in Chichester. Most of the flowers in my back garden have died back now, but the ones in the pots in my front garden are going.........but there are very few bees or other insects about now.

I'm surprised you still have wasps around as they are should be dying off now. There is a good article here: hannasbees.ie/wasp-nests-to-remove-or-not-to-remove about wasps, their nests, and life cycle if your interested.

Thanks for your visit and lovely comments as always! Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Thanks for the link here Keith which I have read with interest. It looks like I was right in not destroying the wasp nest as by-enlarge they do far more good than harm. Apparently the queen, who is the only survivor, leaves the nest in Autumn as her drones and helpers all die. The queen finds somewhere else to hibernate and then starts a new nest in another place - sometimes in doors? -we have had several nest in the loft and a good one in the garage once. We will see what happens.

Cheers.

Love the dying flower petals, they are punky, but it does not seem to disturb the bee...

Thank you Isabel. I think the bee was too focussed on finding the last of the pollen to worry about anything else :-)

Thank you so much Fred......I'm really pleased you like this one!

There's hardly any spiders here at the moment, which is very unusual. It's probably because we've had such a wet summer.
