Racton Monument, West Sussex (PiP)

Racton Monument, West Sussex (PiP)
Racton Monument (also called Racton Ruin or Racton Tower), is a folly situated on a hill in Racton, West Sussex, England. It was commissioned by the 2nd Earl of Halifax, possibly as a summerhouse for the nearby Stansted Estate, though an alternative theory suggests it could have been constructed so the Earl could watch his merchant ships dock at the nearby port village of Emsworth.

it has been abandoned for over a century and is in a state of ruin, with the floors and much of the original flint facing having disappeared, and its roof caving in. Some people believe it is haunted.

Best viewed large, on black. Thank you.

It sits very well in the landscape Keith. The PiP is also very impressive. I love the floating clouds in that shot. An interesting history...I wonder if it is haunted! Is that maize in the field? If so the tower will be mostly hidden by it in a few weeks. Two excellent shots and a great sky, which will be back next week, I am told!!

Glad you like it Rosa and thanks for commenting.

It is reputed to be haunted as evidenced by this extract from Wikipedia "The monument is also popular with paranormal investigators visiting to investigate reported paranormal activity at the site. Witnesses claim to have seen bricks thrown from above, heard ghostly shouts, and intrigue surrounds the myth that the folly may have been used by smugglers."

The last time I went up close it was full of litter and drugs paraphernalia and it smelled of urine - sorry to burst the bubble :-))

I think it was maize...........I was hoping it would have been bright yellow rape :-(

I don't tell many people this as they give me a sorry looking smile, but I have seen a ghost and I was with my daughter at the time and she saw the same as me. I think I have seen another one, at least it was something very strange! I wish we could rid ourselves of damn druggies Keith!

I'm neutral on the matter of the existence of ghosts..............but I do believe there are lots of strange phenomena (for want of a better word), which cannot yet be explained, so who knows?

What a pity it's been left to go to ruin. It is a lovely feature in the landscape.

A great little scene here Keith. In fact this tower folly looks similar to a few I have seen. Great colours and interest in the PiP too.

Cheers, Herb

Lovely Image Keith, I tend to believe the second Theory that the Earl would oversee deliveries as such. We stayed in a hotel in York once where a tower was built on the end of it, this hotel once a private house owned by a rich Mill owner used to supervise cotton being unloaded on the River about a mile away.
