Blue Jay Way

Blue Jay Way
I have been trying to get a shot of this glorious type of bird for months. They are so quick and good at NOT having their picture taken. Finally, I got this one today! :)

This is not really a "Blue Jay" but we usually call them that. They are actually a "Stellar's Jay." But... I think it's close enough to link them to this very cool song by George Harrison when he was still with the Beatles.

They are a really magestic bird and a whole flock can swoop into your yard so quickly almost like a Swat Team. Don't let their pretty exterior fool you. If you've ever been awakened by a flock of them in the early morning you might not appreciate these guys at all. They have the most unfortunate call of any bird. It's really loud and really awful. You can hear it in the link above under the "Sound" tab (3rd "Call" down) Turn it up loud for the full effect. ;-)

The Beatles from their "Magical Mystery Tour" album (1967)

I am, Paul. Photographing any wildlife takes patience. They are such pretty birds that they're worth the wait.

Thanks so much! :)

What a gorgeous shot, Karen! They must be a close relative to the Eastern Blue Jay that inhabits my neck of the woods; very pretty birds, but ugly sounding and aggressive.

I wonder if they are.... Yeah, they're noisy buggers but it's sure fun to watch how sneaky they are. Thanks, Val. :)

What a beautiful looking bird Karen. I love the deep blue colours. An excellent capture, - sitting prettily amongst all the green leaves. With a call like that and those colours you could at least find him and your patience paid off. I don't have a lot of luck with birds and butterflies, - I usually end up with just a blur or nothing at all! I am probably too noisy and too impatient! Love the link Karen, - you can't go far wrong with the Beatles.

A very beautiful bird. And, a very beautiful photograph, Karen. Love the electric blue and the framing is superb. A clever musical match and, yes, a very cool song :-)

i've never been able to photograph these birds, both because they are not prone to holding still for portraits (as you point out), but also because we mostly see western scrub jays here (here being not very far south of you - i'm in portland, oregon)

you've done a great job - beautiful.

i would love to have this in my personal group 'my favorite animals' - would you consider?
