Lake Huron
Photos of Lake Huron.
We Awoke this Morning to this Glorious Sunrise

Lake Huron, from Saint Ignace, Michigan.
Then the fog rolled in and the rain began. It was an ugly drive home.
The Light and the Dock

Wawatam Light, at the end of what was the Chief Wawatam dock. The light marks the entrance to the marina.

Beach Scene

Lighthouse Park, Port Huron, Michigan.
There's something both charming and preposterous about the notion of mixing large freighters and a beach....
Explored! #257 on Flickr [October 23, 2013] Thanks!
Fort Gratiot Light
Turns out you can see the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse complex quite well from the Sarnia side.
Fun at the Beach
Things to do at the beach.
You can fish, you can wade, you can picnic, you can sketch the lighthouse. You could swim, too, though none of these folks are doing so. Or you could be out on the lake....
Lighthouse Park, Port Huron, Michigan.
Fort Gratiot Light
Despite numerous trips to Port Huron over the years, last weekend was the first time I found my way to the navigation light at the foot of Lake Huron. Not sure why that is, but here's the view of the tower from the beach at Lighthouse Park. That's the Blue Water Bridge in the background.
Since the light's within the security perimeter of Port Huron's Coast Guard Station, this is pretty much the only readily available picture unless you're out on the lake or are willing to include the fence in your photo. Neat place, regardless.
Spinnakers
Far better in the larger size.
Shadow and light on Lake Huron, from Port Huron, 7/3/2005.
Spinnaker, according the dictionary supporting Apple's Dashboard, is derived from Sphinx, the name of the first yacht to use such a sail. I wouldn't have guessed.
John G Munson on Lake Huron
Since our first reason for visiting Port Huron is the passing parade of Lakes Boats, here's one of those ships....
Munson's just entered Lake Huron from the St. Clair River by the Fort Gratiot Light.
Horseshoe Bay
We're back! And here's where we were.
On Sunday, we parked the car at Foley Creek campground and hiked to Horseshoe Bay, on Lake Huron, where we spent the afternoon sitting on the beach and reading.
Unfortunately my photograph just hints at the riot of colors in the water--shades from near-black, through redish-brown and turquoise, on toward indigo. A beautiful, relaxing, wonderful day.
That's Mackinac Island off toward the right, and Bois Blanc (Bob-Lo) behind it.
Algorail and Sails
Another view of Algorail, entering Port Huron, Michigan, on July 3, 2005. Looking north towards Lake Huron, approximately under the Blue Water Bridge.
Horseshoe Bay
The sky over Lake Huron at Horseshoe Bay Wilderness , just north of St Ignace. We parked the car down the road from the casino and walked a couple miles along the shore before coming back. One of our favorite places.
Fourteen Foot Shoal Light
Roughly speaking, this is the place where Lake Huron ends and the Mackinac Strait begins.
Spent the last few days at Cheboygan State Park. Highly recommended.
New Presque Isle Light
Between Rogers City and Alpena, Michigan, on Lake Huron. "New" because there's an older light down the road.
Straits Sky

Lake Huron and the Straits of Mackinac from Cheboygan State Park . That's Bois Blanc Island in the distance.
Better Large!
Old Presque Isle Light
Replaced by the New Light in 1871, and long since a museum. We were a little annoyed by the bait-n-switch tactics of the historical society--the roadside sign didn't mention the (quite reasonable, actually) fee, so we shot this from the beach, down the road.
On Lake Huron, between Alpena and Rogers City, Michigan.
Duncan Bay Sunset
Taken a few feet from our campsite at Cheboygan State Park. Looking toward the city across Duncan Bay.
I'll be offline for a few days. See you around.
