Cheboygan Point

At full size, you can see Sandhill Cranes in that marsh and pond. (Just for you, Sam.) Didn't have anything resembling appropriate gear for birding; just my little pocket cam. Next time I shall take the good camera, and a longer lens. Cheboygan State Park, Michigan; way out on the point, near the end of the Green Trail (PDF). Lake Huron's behind me; Duncan Bay is to my right.

The Mackinaw and the Pier

On Friday we explored Cheboygan. We began at the waterfront. From out on the pier we can easily see the Cheboygan Crib Light (it used to live on a crib, out in Duncan Bay) and the new-fangled Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw. Farther back are the barge/tug combo Great Lakes and Michigan (they sat in the harbor for most of the week), and the Front and Rear Range Lights glowing red on the right side of the channel.

The Carnegie Library

A fine old building, well past its prime. Cheboygan's library now lives in a modern building a few blocks away.

Durocher Marine's tug, pushing a barge named Kokosing 2 (after Durocher's parent company). The Lighthouse Cruise's last stop was at Cheboygan; after a brief tour of the harbor our ship returned to her home port, Mackinaw City.

This is the new Mackinaw; the old Mac looks like this . Personally I think they should have spelled this one Mackinac. But hey, it's their ship.
