First pic: "Wed Sept 20 1939
S.S. Maud Thorden
19 Sailors mutinied and
left boat at ft of Hasting street"
Second pic: "Wed Sept 20, 1939
It was to pick up pig iron
in Cleveland to take to Europe
but the sailor's said it was
contraband and refused to go.
They did not get a bonus so"
Second of two; I'm perhaps missing a third. I've copied both captions here because neither alone tells the whole story. News accounts generally reported the number of mutinous crewmen as 14, not 19; the ship carried 14 sailors and 6 officers.
I discussed this ship in rather more detail with last week's photo.
