The highest point on Mount Carmel is the place of "sacrifice" or "burning" (El Muraqa), where – according to the Bible – the prophet Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18:20-40). The site is marked by a monastery of the Roman Catholic Carmelite order constructed in 1868.
