Still working through the Xmas presents
I have been reading Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides for some time now. Plays written 2500 years ago that are amazingly resonant today. They were intended to address current issues using familiar mythological stories as a vehicle. The mythology is not so familiar these days but so many of the issues addressed are.

This music crept by me ...
"This music crept by me upon the waters" (The Tempest, by Shakespeare); or, rather, I ignorantly passed over the Schumann Fantasia for many decades before recently coming to love it. I heard this recording of Richter at Abbey Road Studios in online quality and decided I must have a real CD copy: even if I had to get it from Japan! I would happily have this CD as my grave goods.
The CD also includes The Tempest Sonata by Beethoven. In another life I played that Sonata to a panel of senior professors at the RAM in London. They are all dead now, so it is too late for me to apologise.

John Taylor, the Cutler of Richmond
This very old trade sign has survived above a doorway in some mid-18th century buildings in Richmond, Yorkshire, England. The sign is probably 19th century and is a reminder of how important metalworking was in NE England during the 19th century Industrial Revolution.
Location: between 18 and 19 Market Place, Richmond, Yorkshire, England.
