"The four large painted figures at the meeting of the columns that support the Dome represent four elements; Earth, Fire, Air, and Water. They are by Giovanni Pellegrini, who worked at Castle Howard from 1709 - 1712. The lavishly painted Dome illustrates part of the Greek mythological tale of Phaeton, son of Apollo, who falls to earth from his father's chariot." Castle Howard house, Yorkshire, England.

Castle Howard, in Yorkshire, England. This structure was originally created by Charles Howard, the 3rd earl of Carlisle (1679 - 1738). Eight generations of the Howard family have since occupied Castle Howard: each bringing different characteristics to the stewarding of this grand house and estate through centuries of challenges and opportunities. Castle Howard 'played the part' of the Marchmain family home in the 1981 TV serialisation of Evelyn Waugh's novel Brideshead Revisited. It is difficult not to 'hear' Geoffrey Burgon's evocative music score when visiting the place.
