The main rout of the Saxon forces at the Battle of Hastings took place here after the Normans tricked the Saxons into breaking ranking and chase them down the hill.
7000 people died in the battle.

Apparently the Saxons under the leadership of King Harold decided to fight from a position in front of the Abbey (which wasn't there at the time). The Abbey was later torn down in the reformation.
