Relief at Tianyige Museum

Mahjong at Tianyige Library

The museum had a whole area dedicated to mahjong. I'm not entirely sure why.

Frog at Tianyige Library

We were playing a game of spot the animal at Tianyige Museum (well I was, everyone else thought I was just mad) and decided this looked like a frog.

Fan Qin

25 Dec 2010 136
In China, there was a stage when the "great and the good" collected books and stored them in private libraries. Fan Qin was one such person. His library had 70,000 books at one stage. Then the British came along during the "First Opium Wars" and helped ourselves to up to 57,000 of the best books. Not our finest hour I don't think.

What They Do To Walls Here

I'm a little surprised by this. I gather that this used to be a nice old coastal wall. Being typically Chinese, they've decided to know the thing down to make way for a tatty road

Making Sure They Don't Come Back!

27 Nov 2010 173
The locals in Zhenhai, are proud of the "Battle of Zhenhai." It was a battle between the French and the Chinese during the Sino-French War. The French claim that they just lobbed a few canonballs at the mainland, and stopped boats leaving the port. The Chinese claim that they tied up a number of French battleships for the duration of the war, reducing the impact of the French Navy. Both are probably true.

Call to Arms

I'm not too sure if Hero Stele is the name of the sculptor or another name for the sculpture. It's in the Zhenhai War Memorial Museum, and is called Call to Arms I think.

Zhenhai Homes

21 Nov 2010 138
One of my big problems with where I Iive is that so many of the apartment building look drab. All the homes in Zhenhai look much like this. The only place where I've seen so many drab homes is in Warsaw. There must me something about communist housing!

Statue In A Mazu Shrine

30 Oct 2010 174
Mazu is the Goddess who protects sailors (or so South East Chinese tradition has it) in much the same way that St. Nicholas does it in the Europe I think. This statue was in a cave shrine dedicated to her. I think this guy is a sailor, but I could be wrong (Mazu was a few feet to my left when I took the picture).
