These are some of the native orchids that I recently found along the banks of the Davidson River in the Pisgah National Forest, Transylvania County, North Carolina.
These are fairly reliable from year to year, but I've never seen such a color variety as is represented here.

These images are the result of a long day trip (16 hours) into the mountains of western North Carolina along the Blue Ridge Parkway. I was accompanied by my friend and nature photographer, Alan Cressler as we drove about 150 miles (240 km) of the Parkway, stopping many times along the way to photograph the wildflowers and beautiful mountain scenery.
