Platanthera conspicua

One final summer-season trip to the Francis Marion National Forest in Berkeley County, South Carolina to finish up photographing the Fringed orchids. In addition, I found a specimen of one of our most rare and unusual orchids of the Carolina coastal plain: Pteroglossaspis ecristata or Spiked Medusa orchid .

The target species were Platanthera cristata or Crested Fringed orchid and Platanthera conspicua or Southern White Fringed orchid . I found both of them in fairly good supply, but the Southern White Fringed orchids were just coming into bloom.
