One final summer-season trip to the Francis Marion National Forest in Berkeley County, South Carolina to finish up photographing the Fringed orchids.
In addition, I found a specimen of one of our most rare and unusual orchids of the Carolina coastal plain: Pteroglossaspis ecristata or Spiked Medusa orchid .

One of my annual trips down to the Francis Marion National Forest in Berkeley County, South Carolina. The target species were Platanthera cristata or Crested Fringed orchid and Platanthera conspicua or Southern White Fringed orchid . I found both of them in fairly good supply, but the Southern White Fringed orchids were just coming into bloom.
Lots of other colorful Summer wildflower species were blooming in the forest and along the forest service roads.

The second day of my two-day trip to the Carolina coastal plain took me to southeastern North Carolina -- home of Brunswick County and the Green Swamp Preserve. The target species for this trip were the mid-Summer fringed orchids. We were very successful in our search, with wild orchids being seen in profusion.
