A Igreja do Carmo, was almost all destroyed during the earthquaque of 1755: magnitude 9, and this is how the earthquake of 1755 was considered, the worst natural disaster in its history, which was followed by several aftershocks, fires and several tidal waves, that ended up destroying three quarters of the entire city.
