HBM - The oldest Church

At Sítio, na Nazaré, you can still see the three sanctuaries in which the image was venerated over time: a small cave next to the cliff, one hundred and ten meters above the beach, where Friar Romano lived as a hermit and was buried; the Chapel of Memory, built by D. Fuas Roupinho, on the edge of the cliff, above the cave, where the image was venerated between 1182 and 1377; and the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Nazaré, founded by King Fernando I, in 1377, which began to be rebuilt at the beginning of the 17th century until it acquired its current form, hardly recognizing its medieval origins today.
