The primitive human occupation of the region dates back to prehistory, according to the abundant archaeological evidence there.

Certainly dating back to a pre-Roman fort, at the time of the Roman invasion of the Iberian Peninsula. Chaves was an important urban center as evidenced by the archaeological remains. From the year 78, it became the seat of a municipality founded by Tito Flávio Vespasiano, who named it Aquae Flaviae, in honor of the excellence of the thermal waters in which the region is abundant. To unite the two banks of the river, cut by the Roman road that joined Bracara Augusta (present-day Braga) and Astúrica Augusta (Astorga, today in Spain), the Ponte de Trajano, dating from the 1st century, was built. period the first wall surrounding the village, circumscribed to the historic center of the current city, where the Mother Church was built.

From the 3rd century onwards, the city was the scene of the Suevi invasions, highlighting the fights between Remismundo and Frumário who, disputing the right to the throne, led to the almost total destruction of the village (411), culminating in the victory of Frumário and the arrest of Bishop Idácio de Chaves. Later, Alans and Visigoths would succeed each other until, at the beginning of the 8th century, the Muslims arrived, defeating Rodrigo, the last king of the Visigoths (713). The new conquerors reinforced the fortification of Chaves, as clashes between Moors and Christians took place until the 11th century.

Wish you my friends a very good day.
