Vila Nova de Milfontes

In 1486, D. João II founded a new village, in the place called Milfontes, with the purpose of protecting and developing commercial transactions.
Because it is located on the coast, this region was often plagued by pirates, who plundered and assaulted the population and boats. In the 16th to 18th centuries, the Maghreb pirates afflicted the Portuguese coast in a dramatic way. To face this climate of fear and instability, at the end of the 16th century, the fort of São Clemente was ordered to be built.
