The Rocking Stone is located in the village of Bobadela, 18 km away from Chaves, right next to the National Road 103 in the granitic mountain massif of the Serra do Brunheiro which elevates east from the valley of Chaves and is up to 919-meters high. In the upward climbing, we can see giant round-shaped granite blocks, on the slopes of the mountains just like mushrooms.
The famous Rocking Stone is, undoubtedly, one of the most interesting granite block. It has an irregular shape unlike the others. It is 3 meters high and nearly 10 meters long and wide. Being placed on another rock which serves as a “pillar”, just a small force causes it to rock slightly. It can be pushed by an adult or a kid. The people and families stopping here usually use a wooden stick that they find on the ground and place it right below the rock to see it move, note that the moving right side of it has an estimated weight is about 30 ton. Here seen on the right side.
More than the Rocking Stone itself, it is the stories told by the locals around it. Several years ago, while here, I met a man from a nearby village who told me that the Rock was broken in two because there was an Earthquake a long long time ago in the region, probably several centuries ago. I don’t know if this is true but for sure, it made me curious…
