Arbutus unedo, the strawberry tree, is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the family Ericaceae, native to the Mediterranean region and western Europe north to western France and Ireland. Due to its presence in southwest and northwest Ireland, it is known as either "Irish strawberry tree", or cain or cane apple (from the Irish name for the tree, caithne), or sometimes Killarney strawberry tree. The fruit is a red berry, 1–2 cm (0.39–0.79 in) diameter, with a rough surface. It matures in about 12 months, in autumn, at the same time as the next flowering. It is edible; the fruit is sweet when reddish. Seeds are often dispersed by frugivorous birds
The name unedo is attributed to Pliny the Elder, who allegedly claimed that "unum tantum edo", meaning "I eat only one". It is not known whether he meant that the fruit was so good he could eat only one, or whether he meant that the fruit was uninteresting so he ate only one.
Now a small bit of lore: You will get drunk if you eat too many fruits called "marula" from one African tree and wild elefants know it too . . . marula tree fruits are frequently used by them, thus they get thoroughly drunk too !
But apart from that, take care with the "distillate", it is murderous…"Aguardente de Medonho" it is called and sold everywhere in Algarve but ...

I just read about the liqueur made from this fruit. Would like to try it, but will have to heed your warning, too.

It is a fruit distilate about 40 proof, not a liqueur (think of the Swiss kirsch) and it has something ...hard in it, affects directly the conscient part of our brain IMHO it has something dangerous for our health. What I am trying to say is that it has somethinh akin to the French Absinthe, Ron.
Pls read this copy paste of Wikipédia: Absinthe has often been portrayed as a dangerously addictive psychoactive drug and hallucinogen. The chemical compound thujone, which is present in the spirit in trace amounts, was blamed for its alleged harmful effects.
