I preferred the signs of a more restrained age which indicated simply the name of the place, using less metal and paint, and taking less time to read. Brown signs don't tell you much as you speed past. Anyway, it looks like a headstone in a graveyard. Don't get me started on the signs which say 'please drive carefully through our village' and thank you for doing so at the other end. What kind of idiots think they work?

I would have thought they were more likely to CAUSE accidents by distracting the driver's attention whilst trying to read them. Or maybe that's the passenger's job?

I seem to have some kind of symbolic dyslexia, as my brain is very slow at working out what the pictures mean, and functions much faster with the written word. But, of course, it wouldn't be fair on foreign immigrants to expect them all to read English. It's probably an EU regulation that forces local authorities to have these ugly signs.
