Parkage Artwork

The small town that I live in reserves a public space for local artists to display their work. This photo was taken by a Nikon FE 35mm SLR film camera with a Nikkor-H Auto 1:3.5 f-28mm lens and O56 52mm Nikon filter using Adox CHS 100 II 135 film, the negative scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and digitalized by Photoshop.

AT THE OLD HARBOUR. It is guarded by La Rochelle’s three famous towers: the Saint-Nicolas Tower (on the left), the Chaîne Tower (in the middle) and the Lanterne Tower (on the right). They have stood guard over the city since the 14th century, as remnants of medieval fortifications. At the time, their role was to monitor and regulate the passage of the many merchant ships entering the harbour. The Lanterne Tower is notable for having served as a lighthouse and a place where ships were decommissioned; the Saint-Nicolas Tower and the Chaîne Tower were first used as residences and later as prisons.

The old tower - HBM

It was built in the 17th century and came into operation in 1682, before being replaced in 1854 by the current ‘Les Baleines’ lighthouse (60 m and 254 steps, see PiP). It once served as a navigational aid (27 m) and as an observation point for maritime traffic. At night, its light was initially fuelled by fish oil and later by coal. In the museum at the foot of the old tower, visitors can explore numerous historical exhibits relating to the operation of the lighthouse.
