Why do mainland Chinese squat on the streets?

Foreigners in China often come across a local speciality of people squatting on the streets. I am also curious how Chinese people could sit in a squatting position for a lengthy amount of time without exhausting their legs. Is that thanks to sort of endurance training or is it due to a long history of them having to use squat toilets in China?

Life on two wheels

In China, it's a usual sighting of large numbers of bikers stopping at the traffic signals. Perhaps bizarre for any Westerner, these random groups can easily count 100 bikes or more. While the older and readers of not updated manuals might think about pedal bikes, the Chinese now almost exclusively drive electric and motor bikes. The economic development naturally allows more families purchasing cars, although changing the face of the traffic brings more congestion and traffic jams, as we've seen in the major cities in Americas and Europe years and decades ago.
