Older Than Stockholm

When you notice this stone in the wall at Prästgatan and Kåkbrinken, you are looking at something older than Stockholm itself. This Viking Age rune stone, dating from the late eleventh century, still preserves its serpent motif and fragments of runic text. It was not carved for this house, but was probably moved here from its original location and built into the wall during the medieval period, reused simply as a convenient block of stone. Its presence here shows how a memorial from the Viking Age could lose its original purpose and become part of the fabric of the growing town.
