A quick detour to visit the place where the historic march of the Cherokee began, New Echota, which is now a Georgia Historic Site and Park. Many Native Americans lost their lives on that trek westward (which is commonly referred to as "The Trail of Tears"), including some 4000 of the 15,000 Cherokee relocated as a result of President Andrew Jackson's Act (Indian Removal Act of 1830) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trail_of_Tears . The removal of the Native Americans from their homeland was primarily to open development of the areas for white settlers. The park has limited days and hours of operation and, unfortunately, was closed when I arrived. These photos were taken on a windy, overcast day from the gate, and without the benefit of a tripod or any stable surface on which to mount my camera. I hope to return when the park is opened and with more favorable weather conditions for getting good pictures.
