They aren't kidding. Sign on a tower in York, PA. Unlike FM, where the transmitting antenna is on top of the tower, in AM radio the current runs up and down the tower, and there is a buried ground system running out in all directions from the tower to create a ground wave, which is what your radio picks up. (It's technically way over my head.) Touching the tower will create a direct tower-to-ground path, with the idiot who touched the tower becoming the pathway to ground. Believe it or not, in the past I've seen some AM radio operators who didn't have any fences or warnings of any kind around their towers warning of the very real potential danger of coming in contact with the tower. Fortunately, most towers I see today do have the required fences and warnings.
