The Big Banana

27 May 2017 5 5 178
On the way back from our holiday in NSW in 2017, we paused here at Coffs Harbour so I could take a photo of the BIG BANANA, set in a banana plantation. We have driven past many times on our travels, but I had only taken a photo once, from the car. Claiming to be the first and most famous of Australia’s “Big Things” (although it was actually pipped by the Big Scotsman in Adelaide) the Big Banana was commissioned by John Landi to attract people to his roadside banana stall at Coffs Harbour, NSW. Over the years, the attraction has had mixed fortunes, but is now the centrepiece of an amusement park. The Big Banana itself is made out of concrete. It was designed by engineer Alan Chapman and built by Alan Harvey, opening on 22 December 1964. australianfoodtimeline.com.au/big-banana/ The big things have become something of a cult phenomenon, and are sometimes used as an excuse for a road trip, where many or all big things are visited and used as a backdrop to a group photograph. Many of the big things are considered works of folk art and have been heritage-listed. Wikipedia

We went to the Vet for Harry's vaccination, and paused here on the way home. View to the oyster beds from Coral Avenue, Tuncurry. In the Great Lakes area of the Barrington Coast, NSW Australia. With a surface area of 99 square kilometres, this aqua blue waterway is famous for white sands, fishing, boating and delicious Sydney Rock Oysters that are the finest in the country. Forster and Tuncurry are the twin towns that sit where Wallis Lake meets the ocean, where the Coolongolook River flows into the Tasman Sea. Surrounded by Wallingat National Park on the west and Booti Booti National Park on the east, the pristine waters are fed by the Wallamba River, Coolongolook River and Pipers Creek. We spent a few enjoyable days down on the Central Coast of NSW Australia, catching up with friends. We stayed in a dog friendly apartment with a terrace, which had a view of the back of this hotel, looking towards the Pacific Ocean. Photo below. Crowne Plaza Hotel, a landmark in Terrigal, ocean facing deluxe accommodation.. We remember it as the Holiday Inn. Found this about its history: Peppers bought its way out of commitments to what was then its flagship property, on the NSW central coast, for $2.5 million in January 1992. This led to an attempt to raise $70 million in a float late in 1994 that was abandoned because of rising interest rates and a decline in the sharemarket. The central-coast resort became the Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza at Terrigal. "Those testing experiences taught us a lot," O'Connor says. "You can profit from the lessons of history."
