Die Gasleitungen leckten überall und tausende Straßenbäume sind in der Folge eingegangen. Darauf in kamen schlicht-hässliche Elektroleuchten zum Einsatz und viele der alten Laternen hat Devisenbeschaffer Schalck-Goldkowski in den „Westen“ verkauft. Im Zuge des Wiederaufbaus nach der Wende wurden neue Laternen nach dem historischen Vorbild gefertigt und schrittweise wieder an die ursprünglichen Stellen in der Stadt auf gestellt. Natürlich werden sie elektrisch betrieben (mit Sparlampen als auch mit LED) . Die Dresdner nennen sie aber immer noch Gaslaternen!
