FR: orgue Cavaillé-Coll, 1846 - descriptif en PiP EN: The great organ of Ajaccio Cathedral was built in 1846 by Cavaillé-Coll, father and son, organ builders of King Louis-Philippe. It originally included 33 mechanical transmission sets spread over 3 manual keyboards (2 of 54 notes and 1 of 42 notes), and a 25 notes pedalboard. Restored and enlarged in 1960 by Jacquot Lavergne Establishments, Rambervillers, and in 1964 by Edmond Costa, it now includes 43 sets with pneumatic electro-mechanical transmission spread over 3 manual keyboards of 61 notes and a 32-notes pedalboard. In addition, it is enriched with 31 combinations. The four columns supporting the gallery are one-piece, made of marble from Corte (Corsica). (+ PiP's) La construction de la cathédrale Notre Dame de l'Assomption ou cathédrale Santa Maria Assunta d’Ajaccio, située dans la ville nouvelle génoise, fut terminée en 1593. En 1559, le Conseil de la ville d'Ajaccio intervient auprès de la République de Gênes et du pape Grégoire XIII pour permettre la construction de cette nouvelle cathédrale. Une inscription indique que la cathédrale a été terminée en 1593 par l'évêque Giulio Giustiniani. Napoléon Ier y est baptisé le 21 juin 1771. Elle est classée au titre des monuments historiques en 1906. Napoléon III a commandé à l'architecte Louis-Jules André (1819-1890), un Avant-projet de restauration et d'agrandissement de la cathédrale en 1863. Il prévoyait de changer l'orientation de la cathédrale en tournant sa façade vers l'est pour faire face à la Maison Bonaparte. Les maisons entre la cathédrale et la Maison Bonaparte devaient être détruites. Un peu plus tard, un projet prévoyait de changer l'implantation de la cathédrale. La chute du Second Empire a fait [bienheureusement] renoncer à ces projets.
