Sphalerite

A scanner photo of sphalerite - zinc sulphide, ZnS, from Nenthead, Cumbria. The mineral specimen was placed straight on the scanner glass. I guess the bright blues, reds and pinks are interference colours produced by the double refraction/reflection through the crystal laminae. L-R size is about 7 cm.

Dactylioceras

My avatar picture. This was taken using a scanner in the days before I had a decent digital camera. I just put the fossil directly on the scanner glass. Works quite well, I think.
