Ogof Golchfa near Porth Clais

It was a glorious day out on the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. I just liked the colour of the the sea and the rocks and the warm sunshine - a great pleasure after seemingly endless days of horizontal rain.

Caerbwdy Sandstone at Porth Clais

More views of Porth Clais and St Brides Bay from the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path. Here, steeply dipping beds of Caerbwdy Sandstone (Lower Cambrian age) guard the entrance to Porth Clais. These slabs are often used by climbers.

The Scars

The Scars are a group of stacks and islets just south of Solva, in St Brides Bay, Pembrokeshire. It was a misty grey afternoon, but I liked the softness and the horizontal elements in the view.

Dipping slabs

Dipping slabs of Cambrian-age sandstone on the east side of Caerbwdy Bay, near St David's, Pembrokeshire. I just liked the way the breaking waves highlighted the rhythmic repetition of the dark bedded rocks.

Wet and windy day at Marloes Sands

11 Sep 2008 164
An easterly view of Marloes Sands, Pembrokeshire. Once more it was blowing hard and raining horizontally most of the time. Just one or two intermittent brighter patches that lasted a few minutes and allowed some photography before it closed in again. But no matter. We were dressed appropriately and the scenery was very good indeed.

A grim day at Gateholm, Pembrokeshire

Gateholm Island and Gateholm Stack at the western end of Marloes Sands, Pembrokeshire. Skokholm Island in the distance. Once more it was blowing hard and raining horizontally most of the time. Just one or two intermittent brighter patches that lasted a few minutes and allowed some photography before it closed in again. But no matter. We were dressed appropriately and the scenery was very good indeed.

En-echelon quartz veins, Marloes, Pembrokeshire 1

11 Sep 2008 229
At the western end of Marloes Sands, the Milford Haven Group sandstones (Lower Devonian) are cut by a prominent conjugate set of en-echelon quartz veins. The two conjugate sets indicate a localised tensional regime during the general Variscan folding of the area. They are arranged more-or-less symmetrically about the strike of the beds. In this photo the bedding is steeply inclined approx 60° to the south (right). The grey rocks in the distance are Silurian age.

A even closer view of the en-echelon conjugate quartz veins in the Milford Haven Group (Lower Devonian) sandstones at the western end of Marloes Sands, Pembrokeshire. I just liked the pattern that these made in the red sandstone. The lens cap in the previous photo gives the scale.

Blowing a gale at Newgale

11 Sep 2008 213
The wind was blowing the spray well inland in a ground-hugging mist on this blusterous morning at Newgale, in St Bride's Bay, Pembrokeshire. This couple and their dog happened along at just the right moment.

Old Red folds at Cobbler's Hole

11 Sep 2008 2 421
A nice, bright, blusterous morning in Pembrokeshire! Cobbler's Hole is a steep rocky inlet on St Ann's Head in Pembrokeshire. It has almost vertical walls with the sea crashing in and out over 100 feet below. The star attraction of Cobbler's Hole is the splendid anticline and syncline fold couplet in the Devonian-age Milford Haven Group of the Old Red Sandstone rocks. The 'space problem' in the core of the folds has been accommodated by minor thrusting. There is also a strong axial planar cleavage, particularly developed in the finer grained sediments. Skokholm and Skomer islands are visible in the distance.
