The channel to Hamburg is narrow so ships come in with tugboats, not under their own power.

Couldn't find a specific name for this. One source called it a Schiffsmeldedienst (ship reporting service), another a Leuchtfeuer (beacon). In either case, it's at the point for the transition from the harbor for Finkenweder to the main channel to Hamburg on the Elbe.

Köhlbrandbrücke (Köhlbrand bridge) a cable-stayed bridge connecting portions of the harbor. The Wikipedia page has wonderful aerial views of the bridge: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kohlbrand_Bridge

AIDAdiva, operated by AIDA Cruises, a German company. The ship was launched in 2007 and built in Germany, though it is registered in Italy. This looks very similar to a ship passed earlier at the cruise terminal (see picture #0009), but is not since this same ship was in this same slip when I first arrived at the port.

Tourboats and, on the right, portions of the warehouse city. The warehouse city (Speicherstadt) was built from 1883 to 1927; it was built off shore from Hamburg so it could be a free zone for transfering goods between ships without paying customs. See: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speicherstadt

Showing the diversity of styles in the area. There is a UNESCO page that has an excellent discussion of the architecture in the Speicherstadt: whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/1367
Hamburg Sprinkenhof (#2978)
|
|
The Sprinkenhof, immediately adjacent to Chilehaus and similar in color, but with far more exterior ornamentation and much larger in size. Per the UNESCO description of it, it was built in three phases from 1927 to 1943 with differences in the styles in each phase. The differences in style are, in part, because the original 3-person architectural team became a single architect when one died and the other was banned from building by the Nazi's “for reasons of race”. The UNESCO page provides much more detail on the design: whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/1367
The Wikipedia page on this, which is in German, has a helpful aerial view: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprinkenhof
