Coming out/Northeast
What were some of the most important years for my development as a gay man was while I was living in the Northeast (Binghamton, New York, and Boston) in the 1970's. I didn't take a lot of pictures then, but did attempt to document those years through a series of pictures (this album) that I took in 2007.

As a child I listened to radio broadcasts of shows "live from Radio City" -- broadcasts that suggested all of the potential and excitement of the big city.
The car with the hood raised had been part of the Dominican Day Parade that had passed through the area about 30 minutes earlier. I'd had no idea how large the Dominican community was in New York -- the parade was long and boisterous with multiple contingents of dancers.

I find Rockefeller Center (this and adjacent pictures) to be an important emotional site when in NYC. Built at the worst points in the Depression, I see the art and architecture of Rockefeller Center as expressing what was seen as the potential of America at that time, but with strong acknowledgement of the tension between the libertarian 'free enterprise' spirit of America and the communitarian spirit of the labor movement of that time. That is, as expressing the tensions between self-advancement and community building that always exist.

Interesting detail -- the portrayal of workers, working in close proximity and using modern technology for that time (note the phone, keyboard, camera, and adding machine), but all are looking outward seemingly working towards something outside of themselves.

For all the years that I had gone to NYC in the 70's and 80's, for some reason I had never gone to Coney Island. It had a reputation as being a sleazy beach area, which should have made it interesting, but I think I assumed it was no place for gay men to explore. The reason for visiting it this time was that there are plans to revitalize the famed boardwalk area of Coney Island and there are concerns that the revitalization will remove much of the sleaziness that has historically been part of the charm of Coney Island. Thus, I wanted to see it, before change began....
This first view of Coney Island was somewhat disappointing -- I expected much more crowded beaches, and a much larger area of arcades.

The fact that you could take the subway right to to Coney Island always seemed odd.
