The New York Stock Exchange, on Wall Street. Look closely at the frieze -- America being built by hard, industrious, labor. Seems odd considering that Wall street was killing the value of labor when this picture was taken.

Interesting detail -- the portrayal of workers, working in close proximity and using modern technology for that time (note the phone, keyboard, camera, and adding machine), but all are looking outward seemingly working towards something outside of themselves.

Pahrump, brothel sign

The town of Pahrump is difficult to explain. It just seems to be a collection of gas stations, shops, casinos, and quite a few houses -- and it's growing. I've yet to find a 'center' to Pahrump or any historical buildings (thus no picture), but if you spend any amount of time exploring the desert in that area or in nearby sections of California, you end up visiting Pahrump for food and other supplies. And, no matter how you feel about Wal-Mart, you end up having to shop there since it and the one other grocery store are the only stores in the area for camping-related supplies.
There is one significant institution near Pahrump of interest. Near Hidden Hills Ranch (nearby pictures in this set) there is a surprisingly modern structure situated in an odd and relatively remote part of the desert. Because of its location and modernity, I had assumed that it was either some sort of state prison, or some sort of relatively secret government institution -- which is why I have not tried to photograph it. But, combining a Google map search with other searches indicated that the site is "Front Sight Firearms Training Institute," which is described as a resort where individuals can go for a several day training on use of guns, self-defense, and how to "win a gunfight".
On a lighter note, though -- Pahrump does have a good advertisement for its much smaller neighbor (Crystal), and has two establishments of its own (adjacent pictures)
Mill site near Carrera (Beatty)

Site of former concrete mill, south of Beatty, NV. I mistook this for the site of the former town/marble mill of Carrera, partly because others had made the same mistake. Thanks to the viewer below for providing the correct information -- and a new place to check out!

Picture was taken in 2003, when construction of the new section of the Bay Bridge (to the left of the existing bridge) between Treasure Island and Oakland had just begun.
Treasure Island

When this was taken was right at the time that the buildup for the Iraqi war was beginning, thus it seemed appropriate to focus on the former history of SF in US military action (Treasure Island is a decommissioned Navy Base).
