The Durango & Silverton is a narrow-gauge railroad derived from the narrow-gauge Denver & Rio Grande. The D&RG narrow-gauge opened in 1882 and operated as both a freight and passenger railroad serving much of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico until the 1970’s; with the exception of the Cumbres & Toltec and this, the narrow-gauge has either been abandoned or converted to standard-gauge. The section of narrow-gauge between Durango and Silverton became the Durango & Silverton Narrow-gauge passenger (tourist) railroad in 1981.
