Sego Canyon Rock Art Site, UT (1779)

Sego Canyon Rock Art Site, UT (1779)
Evident, but still barely visible due to the light, are a series of red-painted figures at the top of the set that predate the Fremont era petroglyphs (more visible in Lightbox). Per the plaque (see nearby), the barely visible trapezoidal figures stretching across below the painted figures are Fremont era figures that predate the more detailed and visible trapezoidal bodies and sheep, which are from a later Fremont era. No mention is made on the plaque of the later, marring, etchings by non-Native Americans.

There's a similar rock art site in Buckhorn Wash, which drains into the San Rafael River from the north. The turnoff is off 70 probably about 20 miles west of Green River, where it's marked (IIRC) Wedge Overlook. Then it's another 15-20 miles of graded road! The whole area is one of our favorites because it's the spectacular red rock country, but the unpaved roads keep the crowds out.
Here's one pic of the rock art (see also adjacent photos):

This area seemed to be largely unvisited, though it is right next to a graded road that leads up into an off-road vehicle area (I guess they're not interested in that part of history)....There's a couple of places in the mountains outside Green River that I've wanted to explore, but I'm getting less comfortable with doing those long drives into remote areas by myself.
