It's all a matter of weight. In the past I would have chosen to use a DSLR and large telephoto zoom. I can no longer carry or hand hold that combination for any length of time. Now I either use a travel compact, a mirrorless ILS with a telephoto zoom or a DSLR with a telephoto prime. It all depends on light levels, how far I expect to walk and subjects I hope to find. I'm pleased with the results produced by the travel compact although the percentage of keepers is lower.
