Lothian Region Transport/Lothian Buses
Folder: Scotland buses and coaches
Lothian Region Transport, the former Edinburgh City Transport, operated buses in the Scottish capital and into the adjacent counties of East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian. In 2000 it was renamed Lothian Buses. This album also features the vehicles operated by East Coast Buses and Edinburgh Bus Tours which, like Lothian Buses, are owned by Transport for Edinburgh.

Saturday 2 August 1997 – Lothian Region Transport, the city transport operator in Edinburgh, Scotland, has captured most of the open top bus tour market in the city as I write this in 2017 but 20 years ago there were other competitors which Lothian has now acquired and in fact retained the names of. The Alexander AL bodied Leyland Atlantean was bought in large numbers during the 1970s and now some of the older ones have been converted to open top for the ‘Edinburgh Classic Tour’ like 39 (BFS 39L) new as a standard covered top bus in January 1973 to Edinburgh Corporation Transport, the predecessor to LRT formed in 1975. From the vantage point of Edinburgh Castle the roofless but windowed format of conversion can clearly be seen as the tour progressed along Johnston Terrace.

Saturday 2 August 1997 – Lothian Region Transport 659 (GSC 659X) paused at the traffic lights on High Street, Edinburgh that forms part of the ‘Royal Mile’. New in October 1981 it was the last (numerically) Alexander AL bodied Leyland Atlantean added to the LRT fleet, a combination purchased by LRT through the 1970s. From 1982 the Leyland Olympian came on stream and LRT purchased this chassis with Alexander RH and Eastern Coachworks bodywork. At the time of this visit the LRT fleet comprised about 496 covered top dual door double deckers comprising the last 68 Alexander AL bodied Leyland Atlanteans dating from 1979/1981 and the Olympians with three body styles (ECW (127), Alexander RH (234) and Alexander Royale (67)).

I jumped aboard for a ride on this bus which was working Circle service 6.

The two blue vehicles operate the Lothian Buses ‘Airlink’ airport service. All four are Wrightbus Eclipse Gemini 3 bodied Volvos.
