Morley's Grey London service timetable circa 1972

03 Jun 2016 399
Morley’s Grey Coaches operated a regular service to London from the Mildenhall and Lakenheath area for many years. This timetable dates from the early 1970s. During the 1960s many London families moved to Suffolk as part of the ‘overspill relocation’ programme and Morley’s service provided a direct link to enable families to visit each other in their old and new haunts. The service offered a combination of day return facilities from the Suffolk end on Tuesdays and Saturdays plus additional Friday and Sunday services to enable weekend visits to be made from either end of the service. In addition to the main service originating in Lakenheath there was also a secondary service from West Row via Isleham and Fordham although that did not run on Saturdays. As the years progressed and the family ties between the two areas diminished the late Friday/Sunday weekend services ceased. The service became a daily run from Suffolk to London in the morning returning from London at 1800. It also commenced in Brandon for a time. As the road network improved and the M11 motorway opened the journey time was reduced by one hour.

This timetable dates from the early 1980s after the route was changed to include Red Lodge and Newmarket rather than Freckenham, Chippenham and Snailwell. During the 1960s many London families moved to Suffolk as part of the ‘overspill relocation’ programme and Morley’s service provided a direct link to enable families to visit each other in their old and new haunts. Morley’s Grey Coaches operated a regular service to London from the Mildenhall and Lakenheath area for many years. In this timetable effective 5 April 1983 it shows that the daily service also served Brandon, a facility introduced following the de-regulation of coach services. During the 1960s many London families moved to Suffolk as part of the ‘overspill relocation’ programme and Morley’s service provided a direct link to enable families to visit their old and their new places of residence. The service offered a combination of day return facilities from the Suffolk end on Tuesdays and Saturdays plus additional Friday and Sunday services to enable weekend visits to be made from either end of the service. As the years progressed and the family ties between the two areas diminished the late Friday/Sunday weekend services ceased. The service became a daily run from Suffolk to London in the morning returning from London at 1800. It also commenced in Brandon for a time. As the road network improved and the M11 motorway opened the journey time was reduced by one hour since the 1970s timetables.
