He wrote that this publication only lasted a few years although this was issue number 21. It is indeed a fascinating publication featuring lots of different operators few of which are around today.

In much later years the ‘bible’ for coach…  (read more)

After the creation of the National Bus Company, but before the launch of the 'National' coach branding, the NBC began producing its own express services timetable book named "Britain's Express Coach Guide". This replaced the 'ABC Coach and Bus Guide' which had been bible for booking and enquiry office staff all over Britain and, like the ABC, featured timetables of numerous independent express service operators.

The National Bus Company started to pull together the many coach services operated by its subsidiaries under a corporate brand. Initially National Travel this later became National Express. The Winter 1973/4 coach guide was the first under this branding. Whilst a worthy effort it wasn't as presentable and clear as the NBC style it replaced and also it contained numerous errors.

One of the best buys was the twice yearly National Express coach guide. The covers varied with each issue. I think this one was the last ever and sadly missed even after all these years. Where else could you see all the services in one easy place? The National Express website doesn't present the picture in anywhere near the same manner.

The National Express Coach Guide had become rather large following deregulation and so this additional guide was produced by the National Bus Company as a supplement to the principal long distance service guide. It contained timetables for the medium distance or 'local' coach services available as connections to the main National Express coach network. Limited stop services operated by the likes of Green Line, City of Oxford, Maidstone and District, Ribble, etc etc etc were included.

Hall Brothers of South Shields was an early operator of an express service from Tyneside to Coventry. In later years the original service from South Shields via Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Chester-le-Street and Durham was supplemented with a service from South Shields via Sunderland, West Hartlepool, Billingham and Stockton-on-Tees the two services merging at Darlington and sharing a common route to Coventry via Doncaster, Nottingham, Leicester etc. In the late 1960s the company sold the business to Barton Transport of Nottingham who continued to operate the service using service numbers X81 and X82. The timetable remained very much the same for many years with a journey time of 10 hours 30 minutes in 1932 and 10 hours 25 minutes in 1951. By 1982 this had been reduced to 8 hours 55 minutes. Overnight services were added later operating on Friday and Sunday nights.
