Makinson and North Manchester

Based on the dates shown in the fleet list therein I have assumed that the two vehicles at the far right are LJ 8798 and TE 8291. By deduction the photograph was taken around 1950/1951 (KNE 674 was new in 1950 and FV 1071 left the fleet in 1951). From left to right (dates shown relate to the year in and the year out of the fleet. This is the second of two photographs that appear to be taken on the same day although in this one the coaches are parked in a long line which makes individual identification difficult. Official photographs by Harold K Jones, 1040 Ashton Old Road, Higher Openshaw William Makinson (Manchester) Limited and North Manchester Motor Coaches Limited shared common ownership and these two coaches were new in 1955. The upper photograph is Makinson RVM 35, one of a pair of Burlingham bodied Bedford SB models (the other being RVM 34). The lower photograph is North Manchester RVM 37, a Duple bodied Daimler D650H. (North Manchester also had a Duple bodied Bedford SB numbered RVM 36 that year).

William Makinson (Manchester) Limited SNF 939 was a Duple Vega bodied Bedford SBG new in 1956. The Bedford SB model was available with diesel or petrol engined variants, the ‘G’ indicating gasoline (petrol).

Circa 1966 - North Manchester Motor Coaches Limited END 415D was a Duple bodied Bedford VAM5 which was new in May 1966. (An official photograph, photographer unknown) In 1968/1969 the North Manchester business (together with the associated business William Makinson (Manchester) Limited) was bought by Yelloway Motor Services Limited of Rochdale.

William Makinson (Manchester) Limited END 418D was a Plaxton Panorama bodied Bedford VAM new in 1966. In 1968/1969 the Makinson business (together with the associated business North Manchester Motor Coaches Limited) was bought by Yelloway Motor Services Limited of Rochdale. Whilst no vehicles were involved in these takeovers this coach was leased for a few months along with a similar coach bearing the North Manchester fleetname (GNE 941E). Saturday 19 September 1970 - Yelloway acquired the business of North Manchester Motor Coaches in 1968. Initially a coach (GNE 941E) which had originally been in the fleet of the acquired business was leased rather than purchased to cover the NMMC work. Subsequently YDK 587, which had been delivered to Yelloway in 1961, was transferred to the NMMC subsidiary and it is shown here carrying North Manchester fleetnames. As this was a one off rather than have transfers made, a local signwriter (Charlie Dalgetty) painted the letters after tracing the outline from GNE 941E. YDK 587 was heading out of the Weir Street garage in Rochdale to take up duties on the North Manchester to Blackpool service. From 1961 Yelloway chose the Harrington Cavalier body for its heavyweight coaches, AEC Reliances of course. 1961 was the only year the short length model was purchased because the law was changed which allowed 36 feet long vehicles and from 1962 the longer type became the norm.

In 1968 Yelloway acquired the related businesses of North Manchester Motor Coaches Limited and William Makinson (Manchester) Limited based at 2 Moston Lane, Harpurhey, Manchester 9. Both were primarily involved in the operation of excursions and private hire although there were two express services operated by NMMC to Blackpool and to North Wales. The Blackpool service became part of the 'Fylde Coast' pool which Yelloway shared with Ribble, Standerwick, North Western and Lancashire United.

In 1968 Yelloway acquired the related businesses of North Manchester Motor Coaches Limited and William Makinson (Manchester) Limited based at 2 Moston Lane, Harpurhey,Manchester 9. Both were primarily involved in the operation of excursions and private hire although there were two express services operated by NMMC to Blackpool and to North Wales. During the mid 1950s Yelloway together with Ribble, Standerwick, North Western and Lancashire United formed the 'Fylde Coast Services' Pool. One of the points of the agreement was that any relevant service subsequently acquired by one of the pool members would actually be purchased jointly, each participant paying a varying percentage of the purchase price. The pool services were all numbered 'X something 9' in the numbering system first inspired by Ribble and the NMMC service became X19. However, this was renumbered X29 the following year because North Western already had a service X19 operating from Manchester to Barnsley.

The Blackpool service became part of the 'Fylde Coast' pool but the North Wales service continued with slightly revised timings as reflected in this 1970 timetable.

Over the years some of the different pool services were tweaked a little with certain pick-up points and routings adjusted to give improved service or better loading options. This summer 1976 timetable shows how the X29 had emerged to start at Holinwood but, in the main, covered many of the points served as in the service acquired in 1969. By this time the express services of Ribble, Standerwick and North Western had come under the control of National Travel. Lancashire United was absorbed into Greater Manchester Transport in 1976 with its express service interests dispersed to other express service operators.
