Friday 16 February 1990 - H C Chambers and Son Limited of Bures, Suffolk has operated a motor bus service between Bury St. Edmunds and Colchester via Lavenham, Sudbury and Bures since the 1920s although the business began in 1877 with horse drawn vehicles between Bures and Sudbury. C668 WRT, a Duple Dominant bus bodied YMT new in June 1986, was seen on Angel Hill, Bury St. Edmunds ready to work the service to Colchester. Chambers operated a few of this type each seating 63 passengers achieved by the use of a 3+2 seating layout. Despite the lady in the photograph seeing me actively taking photographs, and despite the fact that she was the only waiting passenger, she didn’t offer to move for me so there she is forming her own orderly queue.

This bus was subsequently acquired by Mulleys Motorways and it became one of the buses I often drove when I was at Mulleys.

Wednesday 27 September 1995 (approx. 1320) – Market Day in Bury St. Edmunds. For many years, before the opening of the bus station in St. Andrew’s Street, Angel Hill was the focal point for quite a number of services operated by the independent bus and coach companies. Prominent in this view is H C Chambers and Son Alexander bodied Leyland Olympian G864 XDX bound for Sudbury, Bures and Colchester (new in November 1989) and Rule’s Coaches Plaxton Supreme bodied Leyland Leopard LIB 1611 bound for its home village of Boxford. (New to National Travel (North West) as SFV 202P in May 1976). I was about to take a trip on the latter to Boxford and after a visit to the Rule’s garage I then travelled into Sudbury on Eastern Counties service 90 (worked by VR243). From Sudbury I travelled to Bures on Chambers G760 VRT finally returning to Bury St. Edmunds on that same bus after spending some time looking round the Chambers garage. On the extreme left is Hedingham Leyland Lynx (L150) and on the extreme right Coach Services (Thetford) Bova Futura F900 RDX.
