In June 2021 an autonomous pod type vehicle was trialled in west Cambridge.

On 24 June 2025 a further trial saw the launch of a timetabled public service using a more traditional mini-bus on the same route.

In December 2025 a second timetabled service began linking Trumpington Park and Ride with Babraham Road Park and Ride.

Wednesday 16 June 2021 (0941) – During June 2021 trials of driverless shuttle vehicles were carried out in west Cambridge as part of a Government funded project through Innovate UK conducted by the Greater Cambridge Partnership, Smart Cambridge and engineering firm Aurrigo Driverless Technology. The trial location was based on the Madingley Road Park and Ride site with vehicles operating to the nearby physical science and technology site of Cambridge University mainly along Charles Babbage Road to the Cavendish Laboratory. Aurrigo BD20 RJU seen at Madingley Road Park and Ride site. In the background is Stagecoach East (Cambus) 10789 (SN66 VZL), an Alexander Dennis (ADL) Enviro400D MMC new in December 2016, wearing the fuchsia livery for the Madingley Road Park and Ride service.

Wednesday 16 June 2021 (0941) – Two different sized electric vehicle vehicles seen at Madingley Road Park and Ride site, Cambridge. On the left is an Aurrigo driverless shuttle vehicle BD20 RJU conducting trials on a route to the nearby physical science and technology site of Cambridge University. On the right is Stagecoach East (Cambus) 14033 (LF69 UXN), one of the two Alexander Dennis Enviro400EV bodied BYD electric buses new in February 2020, was working the service from the city centre. Normally the pair work the ‘Citi 6’ from Cambridge city centre to Oakington. The trial location was based on the Madingley Road Park and Ride site with vehicles operating to the nearby physical science and technology site of Cambridge University mainly along Charles Babbage Road to the Cavendish Laboratory. BD20 RJU is seen turning from Madingley Road into the University site. At this point today the vehicle was under the control of a driver. A switch to autonomous control took place in the lay-by on the right.

The trial location was based on the Madingley Road Park and Ride site with vehicles operating to the nearby physical science and technology site of Cambridge University mainly along Charles Babbage Road to the Cavendish Laboratory. BD20 RJU is seen just after entering the University site. At this point today the vehicle was under the control of a driver. A switch to autonomous control took place in a lay-by on the right opposite the direction sign.

BD20 RJU is seen on the University site having been in the control of a driver from the Park and Ride site. It had just left the layby (right) where it was switched over to autonomous mode.
